What was the initial investment for the first Forever 21 store?

The story behind the answer

The initial investment for Forever 21’s first store was $11,000.

In 1984, South Korean immigrants Do Won Chang and Jin Sook Chang used $11,000 in savings to open their first shop in Los Angeles. The store was originally called Fashion 21 and occupied about 900 square feet on North Figueroa Street in Highland Park. Its merchandise was inspired partly by styles the Changs had seen in South Korea and was aimed initially at the local Korean American community.

The small opening investment produced an extraordinary early result: the store reportedly generated about $700,000 in sales during its first year. The Changs reinvested the business’s success into expansion, opening additional locations at a rapid pace and eventually shifting the name from Fashion 21 to Forever 21.

A common mistake is to confuse the $11,000 startup capital with first-year sales or later corporate investments. They are very different figures. The $11,000 refers specifically to the founders’ savings used to launch the original store, not the company’s later expansion budget.
