What was the full birth name of C.S. Lewis, the British author and scholar?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born Clive Staples Lewis on 29 November 1898 in Belfast, Ireland.

The initials in his familiar pen name came from his first, middle, and last names. Lewis was commonly called “Jack” by family and friends, a nickname that originated in childhood after he adopted the name of his dog, Jacksie.

Lewis later became known internationally as a novelist, Christian writer, literary scholar, and Oxford academic. His best-known works include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Space Trilogy, Mere Christianity, and The Four Loves.

The name “C.S. Lewis” can sometimes make readers assume that the C stood for Charles. It did not: his given name was Clive, and Staples was his mother’s maiden name. His brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis, was usually called Warnie and later became an important source for biographical information about him.
