What was the first production motorcycle made by the Indian Motorcycle Company?
Answer
Indian Single
Answer
Indian Single
The first production motorcycle made by the Indian Motorcycle Company was the Indian Single.
Indian began producing motorcycles in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The early machine used a single-cylinder engine and was derived from the company’s first prototype, developed by Oscar Hedstrom and George Hendee.
The Indian Single became the foundation of the company’s early range. Its simple layout reflected the engineering of the period, when motorcycles were still developing from motorized bicycles into dedicated machines with stronger frames, improved control systems, and larger engines.
The Scout, Chief, and Powerplus were important later Indian models, but they were not the company’s first production motorcycle. Indian eventually became one of America’s best-known motorcycle manufacturers before its original operation ceased in the 1950s.
