What was the first production motorcycle in Honda’s Gold Wing series?

The story behind the answer

The first production motorcycle in Honda’s Gold Wing series was the Honda GL1000.

Honda introduced the GL1000 in 1974 as a large touring motorcycle powered by a 999 cc liquid-cooled, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. It was initially positioned more as a high-performance road motorcycle than as the fully equipped long-distance tourer that the Gold Wing would later become.

The GL1000 used shaft drive and a longitudinally mounted engine, features that helped make the series smooth and suitable for long journeys. Early examples had relatively little luggage or touring equipment compared with later Gold Wings.

The GL1100 followed in 1980 with more touring-oriented equipment and a larger 1,085 cc engine. Later generations added extensive bodywork, luggage, audio systems and increasingly powerful engines, but the GL1000 remains the original Gold Wing model.
