What was the first Pixar sequel not connected to the Toy Story films?

The story behind the answer

Cars 2 was the first Pixar sequel not connected to the Toy Story films.

Released in 2011, Cars 2 followed the original Cars from 2006 and became Pixar’s first sequel outside the Toy Story series. The film expanded the franchise from a small-town racing story into an international spy adventure involving the World Grand Prix, secret agents, and a plot centered on Allinol fuel.

Before Cars 2, Pixar had produced Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 as sequels to its first feature. Cars 2 therefore marked a significant change in the studio’s sequel strategy. It was followed by Monsters University in 2013 and Finding Dory in 2016, among other non-Toy Story follow-ups.

Cars 2 is sometimes overlooked because it was not Pixar’s first sequel overall. Its precise distinction is that it was the first sequel from a Pixar franchise other than Toy Story. Cars 3 later continued the same franchise in 2017.
