What was the first Pixar film to feature a post-credits scene: Cars or Cars 2?

The story behind the answer

Cars was the first of the Cars films to feature a post-credits scene.

After the main story of Pixar's Cars, the credits include a humorous sequence in which characters visit a drive-in theater showing versions of earlier Pixar films. The sequence plays with the idea that the characters in this automobile world would see other movies as car-themed productions.

The scene references Toy Car Story, A Bug's Life, and Monster Trucks, echoing Pixar titles while adapting them to the Cars universe. It is a bonus gag rather than a continuation of the main plot, but it helped establish the film's playful approach to Pixar self-reference.

Cars 2 and Cars 3 also use credits-related material and extra character moments, which can make the films easy to confuse when discussing post-credits content. The original Cars opened in 2006, before the franchise expanded into its international spy adventure and later racing drama.
