What was the first Oakley X Metal series model?

The story behind the answer

What was the first Oakley X Metal series model? The first Oakley X Metal series model was Romeo.

Oakley introduced X Metal as a distinctive line of sculpted metal eyewear made from a lightweight, durable titanium alloy. The first production model was released as the Romeo in 1997, following development work that began the previous year. Its wraparound shape, substantial frame and futuristic appearance became hallmarks of the collection.

The model has an unusual naming history. Early development and preview materials referred to the design as “Oscar”; that first incarnation was later renamed Romeo before the product reached the market. This is why collectors and historical accounts may mention Oscar when discussing the origin of X Metal, even though Romeo is the standard answer for the first released model.

Romeo was followed by other well-known X Metal designs, including Mars, Juliet, XX and Penny. Juliet became especially recognizable after appearing in the X-Men films, but it was not the first model. Romeo 1 production continued until 2004, when Romeo 2 replaced it.
