Oakley’s ski goggle with a built-in heads-up display was called Airwave. The product combined an Oakley snow-goggle frame with Recon Instruments’ MOD Live display system, placing information inside the wearer’s field of view.
Oakley unveiled Airwave in 2012. The display could show information such as speed, altitude, distance and jump data, while a smartphone connection added features including caller identification and text-message notifications. This made Airwave an early example of wearable technology designed specifically for action sports rather than general-purpose computing.
Airwave is sometimes confused with ordinary Oakley goggle models such as Flight Deck, Canopy or O’Frame. Those names identify conventional snow-goggle lines, whereas Airwave refers to the technology-integrated product. Oakley later released Airwave 1.5, which incorporated Recon’s newer Snow2 heads-up display. Recon’s systems were also designed to fit compatible goggles from several other manufacturers.
