What was the first name of photographer Stieglitz, whom Georgia O’Keeffe married in 1924?

The story behind the answer

The photographer Georgia O’Keeffe married in 1924 was Alfred Stieglitz.

Stieglitz was a major figure in American photography and modern-art promotion. He exhibited O’Keeffe’s drawings at his New York gallery, known first as 291, beginning in 1916. Their professional relationship became personal, and they married after Stieglitz’s divorce from Emmeline Obermeyer.

Stieglitz photographed O’Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of images of her between 1917 and 1937. Their partnership connected her with the New York avant-garde, although O’Keeffe developed an independent artistic reputation and did not simply work under his direction.

The couple lived mainly in New York and at Lake George, while O’Keeffe increasingly traveled to New Mexico. Stieglitz remained in New York and continued operating his galleries until his death in 1946. O’Keeffe later moved permanently to New Mexico.
