What was the first name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s son who edited The Silmarillion?

The story behind the answer

Christopher was the first name of J.R.R. Tolkien’s son who edited The Silmarillion.

Christopher Tolkien edited and arranged his father’s extensive posthumous materials for The Silmarillion, published in 1977. J.R.R. Tolkien had worked on the mythology behind the book for decades, but he left it in multiple versions and states of completion. Christopher selected, organized, and sometimes connected those texts to create a publishable volume while attempting to preserve the character of his father’s imagined history.

The Silmarillion presents the creation of the world, the Valar, the Elves, and major stories from the First Age, including the tales of Beren and Lúthien and Túrin Turambar. It is not a conventional sequel to The Lord of the Rings. Christopher later edited further volumes of his father’s writings, including The History of Middle-earth. His role was therefore that of literary editor and custodian of a large, unfinished scholarly and creative archive.
