Quenya is the Elvish language created by J.R.R. Tolkien and closely associated with the Elves of Valinor.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his invented languages for the peoples of Middle-earth and the wider mythology of Arda. It was inspired chiefly by the sounds and structures of Finnish, with additional influences from other languages. In Tolkien’s fictional history, Quenya was associated especially with the Ñoldor and other High Elves who came from or were connected with Valinor.
Sindarin is a different Elvish language. It became more widely used in Middle-earth during the later histories and was influenced by Welsh in Tolkien’s linguistic design. The two languages are therefore related within Tolkien’s mythology but are not interchangeable.
Quenya appears in names, poems, ceremonial speech, and titles throughout Tolkien’s legendarium. “Namárië,” Galadriel’s lament in The Lord of the Rings, is one of the best-known substantial examples of Quenya in the published fiction.
