C.S. Lewis’s older brother was named Warren. Warren Hamilton Lewis was born in 1895 and remained closely connected to his younger brother throughout their lives.
The brothers shared a love of history, literature, and imagined worlds. As children, they created stories about an invented land called Boxen. Warren later served as an officer in the British Army during the First World War and became a historian, concentrating especially on seventeenth-century France.
Warren is sometimes overlooked because his brother became internationally famous as the author of The Chronicles of Narnia. However, Warren preserved and edited family materials and wrote historical works of his own. The brothers also lived together for much of their adult lives, first in Oxford and later at The Kilns, Lewis’s home outside the city.
