The Honda RC30 was the motorcycle that won the first Superbike World Championship for its rider in 1988.
Honda’s VFR750R, commonly known as the RC30, was built as a homologation special for superbike racing. Its 748 cc liquid-cooled V4 engine, gear-driven camshafts, single-sided swingarm and lightweight construction made it highly competitive on the track.
Fred Merkel won the inaugural 1988 championship on an RC30. The series was created for production-based motorcycles, so manufacturers had to develop road-legal versions of their racing designs. Honda produced the RC30 in limited numbers to satisfy those homologation requirements.
The RC30 is often confused with Ducati’s 851, which became a dominant World Superbike machine in the early 1990s. The Ducati was important to the championship’s later history, but Honda’s RC30 and Merkel took the inaugural title.
