What was the first iPhone to feature Face ID?

The iPhone X was the first iPhone to feature Face ID. Apple announced it on September 12, 2017, and released it on November 3 as a premium model alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Face ID replaced the fingerprint-based Touch ID system and used the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera assembly. An infrared projector mapped the user’s face with more than 30,000 invisible dots, while an infrared camera read the pattern. The resulting facial data was processed through the phone’s Secure Enclave rather than being uploaded to Apple’s servers.

The iPhone X also removed the traditional Home button, so Face ID worked alongside new swipe gestures for navigation. The iPhone 8 launched at the same time but retained Touch ID, making it a common source of confusion. Face ID later appeared on newer flagship iPhones and iPad Pro models, while certain iPhone SE models continued using Touch ID.
