What was the first iPad model to feature a Retina display?

The iPad (3rd generation) was the first iPad model to feature a Retina display. Apple unveiled it in March 2012 and marketed it simply as the “new iPad.”

Its 9.7-inch screen had a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels, four times the pixel count of earlier iPad displays. At 264 pixels per inch, the screen made individual pixels much harder to distinguish at a normal viewing distance, which was the central idea behind Apple's Retina branding.

The third-generation iPad also introduced Apple's A5X chip, a 5-megapixel rear camera, 1080p video recording, voice dictation, and LTE support in North America. The iPad 4 followed later in 2012 with a faster A6X chip, but it was not the first Retina iPad. The iPad Air was a later redesign, not the original Retina pioneer.
