What was the first Harry Potter novel published in Britain?
Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Answer
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
The first Harry Potter novel published in Britain was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Bloomsbury released the novel in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It introduced Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the central conflict with Lord Voldemort.
When the book was published in the United States, Scholastic changed the title to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The story and author were the same, but the American title used “Sorcerer’s” instead of “Philosopher’s” for marketing reasons.
The British edition was Rowling’s debut novel. Its success led to six sequels, eight main film adaptations, and a global publishing phenomenon. The title should not be confused with the second novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
