What was the first city featured in MTV’s reality series The Real World?

New York City was the first city featured in MTV’s reality series The Real World. The inaugural season, The Real World: New York, premiered in 1992 and followed seven young adults living together in a SoHo loft.

The series was created by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray. Its original premise placed strangers from different backgrounds in one residence and filmed their relationships, disagreements, and daily lives. The first cast included Norman Korpi, Andre Comeau, Heather B. Gardner, Julie Gentry, Eric Nies, Kevin Powell, and Becky Blasband.

The New York season helped define the format later associated with reality television: a shared house, a deliberately varied cast, and episodes built around interpersonal conflict rather than scripted plots. Later seasons moved to cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London. The show is sometimes confused with Road Rules, another MTV reality series that used traveling contestants rather than a single shared residence.
