The first Android version officially associated with a dessert codename was Android Cupcake.
Android Cupcake, also known as Android 1.5, was released on April 27, 2009. It introduced the dessert-based naming pattern that became a recognizable part of Android branding, with later releases named Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, and others.
Cupcake was more than a name change. It added an on-screen keyboard, support for third-party widgets, video recording, and the ability to upload videos to YouTube. These features helped Android become more practical on phones without physical keyboards.
A common source of confusion is Android 1.1, which was internally associated with the dessert name “Petit Four.” However, Cupcake is the canonical answer in Android's public version-naming sequence and the first official release broadly treated as part of the dessert-codename tradition.
