What was the final published volume of C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle was the final published volume of C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Published in 1956, The Last Battle concludes the seven-book Narnia series. The plot centers on deception in Narnia, the ape Shift’s manipulation of Puzzle the donkey, and the conflict that brings the world’s history to its end. The book received the Carnegie Medal in 1957.

The Last Battle is often confused with The Silver Chair because both are late entries in the series and involve major changes in Narnia. The Silver Chair was published in 1953 and is the sixth book in publication order, while The Last Battle followed it as the seventh.

Lewis dedicated The Last Battle to his goddaughter Lucy Barfield, who inspired the name Lucy Pevensie. The book’s title refers to the climactic conflict, but the narrative also extends beyond that battle into a final, transformed setting.
