Audi’s R10 TDI used a 5,500 cc, 90-degree V12 diesel engine with twin turbochargers. The racing prototype was developed for the LMP1 class and represented Audi’s bold move from successful petrol-powered prototypes to diesel endurance racing.
The R10 was unveiled in Paris on December 13, 2005, and made its competition debut at the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring. Later that year, it became the first diesel-powered car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Audi repeating the overall victory in 2007 and 2008.
The displacement is often confused with the car’s power output or torque. The engine produced more than 650 PS and enormous torque, while its 5.5-liter capacity remained the key specification. Its successor, the R15 TDI, used a smaller and lighter engine.
