Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the codename for the planned Allied invasion of Kyūshū in late 1945.
Olympic was the first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands. It was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, with landings in southern Kyūshū, Japan’s southernmost main island.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for March 1946 and would have targeted the Kantō Plain near Tokyo on Honshū. Olympic was intended to secure airfields and staging areas needed for the later operation.
Japan’s surrender after the atomic bombings, the Soviet entry into the war, and the wider military situation canceled Downfall before either invasion occurred. Because Olympic was part of an invasion plan rather than an executed campaign, it is sometimes incorrectly described as a battle.
