In which New York City location was the famous V-J Day kissing photograph taken?

The story behind the answer

The famous V-J Day kissing photograph was taken in Times Square, New York City.

Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed the scene on August 14, 1945, as crowds gathered to celebrate the expected announcement that Japan had accepted the Allied surrender terms. The image shows a sailor kissing a woman in a white dress among the crowded streets.

The photograph was taken just south of 45th Street, looking north toward the area where Broadway and Seventh Avenue converge. Researchers have estimated that the image was captured at about 5:51 p.m. Eastern Time.

Life magazine published the image a week later in a special section about victory celebrations. Because similar photographs were taken elsewhere, the Times Square setting is an important detail distinguishing Eisenstaedt’s image from related wartime photographs.
