Which two operations formed the planned 1945 Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall?
Answer
Olympic and Coronet
Answer
Olympic and Coronet
Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet formed the planned Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall.
Olympic was intended to capture the southern part of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. It was scheduled for November 1945 and would have used Okinawa as a major staging area for Allied forces and air support.
Coronet was planned for spring 1946 and aimed at the Kanto Plain on Honshu, the main Japanese island. Its objective area included Tokyo and the surrounding region. Together, the two operations represented the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands.
These operations were never launched because Japan surrendered in August 1945. Operation Overlord, by contrast, was the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944, while Olympic and Coronet belonged to the unexecuted Downfall plan.
