Answer
Operation PBSUCCESS
What was the code name of the CIA operation that overthrew Guatemalan President Arbenz in 1954? The operation was code-named Operation PBSUCCESS, also written PBSuccess.
The CIA organized PBSUCCESS during the Cold War to remove Guatemalan President Jacobo Árbenz. Árbenz’s government had introduced land reform, including the expropriation of unused portions of large estates with compensation based on declared tax values. United Fruit Company property was affected, and the company’s political influence helped intensify pressure in Washington.
The operation combined a small rebel force, psychological warfare, propaganda, diplomatic pressure, and threats of wider military intervention. The campaign helped create the impression that Guatemala faced a large, unstoppable communist-backed invasion, even though the rebel force itself was limited.
Árbenz resigned on June 27, 1954. Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas then emerged as the country’s dominant new leader. PBSUCCESS is often confused with Operation Ajax, the CIA-backed 1953 coup in Iran; they were separate operations.
