The call sign of the Titanic’s wireless station was MGY.
MGY was the maritime call sign assigned to Titanic’s Marconi radiotelegraph station. Call signs identified radio stations, so MGY technically referred to the ship’s wireless installation and its operators rather than functioning as a nickname for the vessel.
Titanic’s radio room was operated by Jack Phillips, the senior wireless operator, and Harold Bride. During the disaster, they transmitted distress messages using CQD, the established Marconi distress signal, and SOS, the newer international signal. Those emergency codes are often confused with MGY because all three appear in accounts of Titanic’s final hours.
MGY remained Titanic’s identifying radio call sign throughout its maiden voyage. The ship’s radio communications helped summon the rescue ship Carpathia, although Phillips continued transmitting until the wireless room lost power.
