What was the birth name of the author C.S. Lewis?
Answer
Clive Staples Lewis
Answer
Clive Staples Lewis
C.S. Lewis was born Clive Staples Lewis on 29 November 1898 in Belfast, Ireland. “C.S.” came from his first and middle names rather than from a separate pen name.
Lewis was known to family and friends as Jack, a nickname he adopted after childhood experiences with a dog named Jacksie. He later used “C.S. Lewis” for most of his published work, including fiction, literary criticism, and Christian apologetics.
His birth name is sometimes confused with “Jack,” but Jack was an informal name, not his legal birth name. Lewis’s older brother was Warren Hamilton Lewis, who became a historian and helped preserve his brother’s papers.
Lewis died in Oxford in 1963. His best-known works include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, and Mere Christianity.
