What was the approximate total length of the Berlin Wall system?
Answer
155 kilometres
Answer
155 kilometres
The Berlin Wall system had an approximate total length of 155 kilometres.
This figure describes the fortified border surrounding West Berlin, not simply the visible concrete slabs running through the city centre. About 43 kilometres of the system divided East and West Berlin directly, while the remainder encircled West Berlin’s boundary with the surrounding East German territory. The installation included walls, fences, patrol roads, watchtowers, lighting, and restricted areas.
Measurements vary slightly between sources because the border was a complex system rather than one continuous wall of identical construction. The best-known surviving artistic section, the East Side Gallery, is only about 1.3 kilometres long and therefore represents a small part of the whole. The Wall’s geographic scale also explains why escape attempts occurred at many different sites.
