What was the approximate maximum speed of the commercial airliner Concorde?

The story behind the answer

The commercial airliner Concorde had an approximate maximum speed of Mach 2.04.

That speed was about 2,180 kilometres per hour, or around 1,354 miles per hour, depending on atmospheric conditions and the measurement used. Concorde normally cruised at roughly 60,000 feet, high above most conventional passenger aircraft.

The aircraft was jointly developed by British and French manufacturers and entered scheduled service in 1976 with British Airways and Air France. Its supersonic speed reduced the London–New York journey to roughly three and a half hours, compared with about seven or eight hours for conventional jets of the era.

Concorde’s speed came with major trade-offs, including high fuel consumption, sonic booms, limited route availability, and expensive maintenance. A crash involving Air France Flight 4590 in 2000 and declining economics contributed to the type’s retirement in 2003. Concorde remains the best-known supersonic airliner to have operated regular passenger services.
