What was the 1996 U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team’s record at the Atlanta Games?

The story behind the answer

The 1996 U.S. women’s Olympic basketball team finished the Atlanta Games with an 8–0 record.

Coached by Tara VanDerveer, the United States won every game of the Olympic tournament and captured the gold medal. The team defeated Brazil in the gold-medal final, completing an undefeated run on home soil in Atlanta.

The roster included future Hall of Famers Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Dawn Staley, Teresa Edwards, Rebecca Lobo, and Katrina McClain. Their dominance helped raise the international profile of women’s basketball and became part of the momentum behind the WNBA’s launch later in 1996.

The team entered the 2026 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a unit. It is important not to confuse its 8–0 Olympic record with the separate records of individual players or with later United States Olympic teams.
