Ghost Ranch was the New Mexico destination where Georgia O'Keeffe later owned a home.
O'Keeffe first visited Ghost Ranch in 1934 and became captivated by its multicolored cliffs, broad skies, and dramatic geological formations. She bought a house there in 1940 and used the landscape as a major source for paintings.
The name Ghost Ranch refers to a historic ranch and retreat area near Abiquiú. O'Keeffe often worked outdoors, isolating shapes such as cliffs, trees, and bones and presenting them with simplified contours and strong color.
Ghost Ranch is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe’s Abiquiú house. They are separate places: she acquired the Ghost Ranch property earlier, then bought and restored an adobe house in Abiquiú in 1945. Both locations remain central to accounts of her New Mexico life.
