Taobao launched in 2003 under Alibaba Group.
Alibaba created Taobao in May 2003 as a consumer-to-consumer marketplace in China. Its launch came during a period when online retail was developing rapidly and international competition was increasing. Taobao was designed to let individuals and small merchants list products for Chinese shoppers.
The platform competed with eBay’s EachNet business in China. Taobao initially offered free listings, a strategy that helped attract sellers and buyers. Alibaba later developed tools such as Alipay, which helped build trust in online transactions by addressing concerns about payment and delivery.
Taobao is distinct from Tmall, another Alibaba marketplace aimed primarily at brands and established retailers. Taobao’s original identity centred on consumer sellers and small businesses, although the platform has since become a major part of China’s digital commerce ecosystem. The launch year is 2003, not 1999, which is the year Alibaba itself was founded.
