What was Steve Martin’s first comedy album, released in 1977?

The story behind the answer

Steve Martin’s first comedy album, released in 1977, was Let’s Get Small.

Warner Bros. Records released the album in January 1977, during the period when Martin was becoming a major stand-up and television performer. It includes routines built around Martin’s absurdist stage persona, including material associated with his catchphrases and playful mockery of conventional comedy structure.

The album was a commercial success and received a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Recording. Its follow-up, A Wild and Crazy Guy, arrived in 1978 and won the Grammy in that category. Martin later moved away from regular stand-up performance, concentrating increasingly on acting, writing, music and live bluegrass shows.

A common mistake is choosing A Wild and Crazy Guy because it contains some of Martin’s most famous material and became a major hit. It was his second comedy album, not his debut. The title Let’s Get Small also became one of the signature phrases associated with his early stage act.
