What was Stanley Kubrick’s final completed film, released after his death in 1999?

The story behind the answer

Eyes Wide Shut was Stanley Kubrick’s final completed film, released after his death in 1999.

The film stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple in New York whose relationship is unsettled after a candid conversation about desire and fidelity. Cruise’s character then moves through a series of encounters that lead to a secret masked gathering. Kubrick adapted the story from Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Traumnovelle, also known as Dream Story.

Kubrick died on 7 March 1999, shortly after showing a final cut to Cruise, Kidman, and studio executives. Warner Bros. released the film in July 1999. Because it was completed before his death, Eyes Wide Shut is his last finished movie, unlike A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which Kubrick developed but Steven Spielberg directed after Kubrick’s death.

The film’s production lasted several years and became known for its secrecy and unusually long shoot. Its release generated discussion about censorship, erotic imagery, marriage, and the contrast between private fantasies and public identity.
