What was Samwise Gamgee’s occupation before joining Frodo’s quest in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Samwise Gamgee was a gardener before joining Frodo’s quest in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Sam is introduced as Frodo Baggins’s gardener at Bag End. He is also the son of Hamfast Gamgee, commonly called the Gaffer, who is an experienced gardener in Hobbiton. Sam’s practical knowledge and loyalty become important as the journey moves far beyond the Shire.

Although Sam begins as Frodo’s servant and companion, his role develops into that of a major hero. He helps protect Frodo, carries the Ring-bearer when necessary, resists the Ring’s temptation, and ultimately helps make the destruction of the Ring possible.

Sam is sometimes reduced to the role of a sidekick, but Tolkien gives him one of the story’s most important character arcs. After the War of the Ring, Sam returns to the Shire and becomes its mayor, while continuing his connection with gardening and the restoration of the land.
