What was Reddit Premium formerly called?

The story behind the answer

What was Reddit Premium formerly called? The answer is Reddit Gold.

Reddit Premium was formerly called Reddit Gold, the site’s paid membership program. Reddit introduced Gold in July 2010 as a way to generate revenue beyond conventional advertising while giving subscribers extra site features.

Gold was more than a subscription label: users could purchase it for themselves or gift it to other users as a reward for especially useful, funny, or memorable posts and comments. Premium membership historically included ad-free browsing, access to r/lounge, comment highlighting, and profile-related cosmetic features.

Reddit renamed Gold to Reddit Premium in 2018, so older articles, user profiles, and community discussions often use both names. This can cause confusion with Reddit’s later award and coin systems. Reddit discontinued the original coins and classic awards in 2023, although it subsequently introduced a newer awards system. Thus, “Reddit Gold” is the historical name of the membership program, not simply a generic term for every award Reddit has offered.
