What was Pixar’s first Cars spin-off television series, launched in 2008?

The story behind the answer

Mater’s Tall Tales was Pixar’s first Cars spin-off television series, launched in 2008.

The series is part of Cars Toons and focuses on Mater recounting extraordinary stories about his supposed past. Each short usually begins with Mater claiming that he participated in a remarkable event, such as becoming a stunt performer, a rock star or a professional wrestler. Lightning McQueen often appears as his listener and companion.

The stories are intentionally exaggerated, and the series plays with the question of whether Mater is telling the truth. That comic structure distinguishes the shorts from the feature films, which present the Cars world through longer dramatic plots.

Mater’s Tall Tales debuted as a Disney Channel series in 2008. It predates Cars on the Road, a later Disney+ series released in 2022. The shorts were produced by Pixar Animation Studios and expanded the characters’ adventures beyond the theatrical films.
