McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef-like character used in McDonald’s early branding, reflecting the restaurant’s emphasis on speedy service. The name echoed the company’s fast-service identity before the Golden Arches became its dominant visual mark.
Speedee is sometimes confused with Ronald McDonald, who was introduced later as a children’s advertising character. The character also predates the broader McDonaldland cast, including the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese.
As McDonald’s expanded, the Golden Arches became more recognizable than Speedee. The company’s branding therefore shifted from a mascot centered on speed to a simple architectural symbol that could work on buildings, packaging, signs, and advertisements.
