McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a small chef character used in McDonald’s early branding during the 1940s and 1950s. His name referred to the chain’s “Speedee Service System,” which emphasized fast, standardized food preparation.
Speedee appeared on signs and promotional material before McDonald’s developed the larger McDonaldland character universe. The character was eventually replaced as the chain’s best-known mascot by Ronald McDonald, who made his advertising debut in 1963.
Speedee is sometimes confused with later characters such as the Hamburglar or Mayor McCheese. Those figures belonged to McDonaldland, while Speedee represented the earlier brand identity built around speed and efficient service.
