McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef-like character used by McDonald’s when the company was developing its fast-service identity in the late 1940s. The name emphasized speed, which was central to the McDonald brothers’ operating system and branding.
Speedee appeared on early McDonald’s signs and packaging before the company adopted a larger cast of characters. The mascot is often confused with Ronald McDonald, but Ronald was introduced much later, in the 1960s, as a television-oriented character aimed at children.
Speedee also reflects an earlier stage of McDonald’s history, when the brand’s visual identity focused more directly on quick food preparation than on the Golden Arches. Although the character disappeared from mainstream advertising, he remains an important link between the restaurant’s original visual language and its later global branding.
