What was McDonald’s original mascot, introduced with its first major logo in 1948?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee.

Speedee was a chef-like character used in McDonald’s early branding after the restaurant introduced its Speedee Service System. The system emphasized a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and fast service, so the mascot reinforced the company’s central promise of quick food.

Speedee was not the same character as Ronald McDonald. Ronald appeared nationally much later, in the 1960s, as McDonald’s shifted toward family-oriented advertising. Other familiar characters, including the Hamburglar and Mayor McCheese, belonged to the later McDonaldland advertising world.

The Speedee image eventually disappeared from most prominent McDonald’s branding as the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant symbol. However, the mascot remains important in the company’s visual history because it connected the early logo directly to the restaurant’s original service concept.
