McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee, a smiling chef character used before Ronald McDonald became the brand’s best-known mascot.
Speedee represented the restaurant’s early emphasis on fast service. The character was linked to the Speedee Service System developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant in the late 1940s.
Speedee is sometimes confused with McDonaldland characters introduced later. The Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese all belonged to the fictional McDonaldland advertising world, while Speedee came from the company’s earlier branding era.
Ronald McDonald gradually became more prominent during the 1960s, helping McDonald’s build a child-focused advertising identity. Speedee nevertheless remains an important part of the company’s pre-Ronald visual history.
