McDonald’s first official mascot before Ronald McDonald was Speedee.
Speedee was created for the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant branding and symbolized the fast service that distinguished their operation. The mascot’s chef-like appearance and hamburger-shaped head made the connection between speed, cooking, and hamburgers immediately understandable.
The name also reflects the restaurant’s early emphasis on efficiency. In 1948, the McDonald brothers reorganized their operation around a faster self-service system, and Speedee fit naturally into that identity. The mascot appeared before the later fictional world of McDonaldland.
Later characters such as Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and Officer Big Mac belonged to the expanded McDonaldland cast. They should not be treated as the company’s original mascot: Speedee predates that group and Ronald McDonald alike.
