What was McDonald’s first nationally distributed character mascot after Speedee?

The story behind the answer

Ronald McDonald was McDonald’s first nationally distributed character mascot after Speedee.

McDonald’s introduced Ronald McDonald in 1963 as a friendly clown who could appeal directly to children. The character appeared in television advertising and promotional material, helping the chain build a family-centered identity beyond its food and restaurant signs.

The earliest television version was played by Willard Scott, who had already portrayed a clown character on television. McDonald’s later refined Ronald’s costume and appearance, turning him into the central figure of the expanding McDonaldland cast.

Speedee, the earlier hamburger-headed mascot, represented fast service and was gradually replaced in public-facing branding. Characters such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese arrived later and became supporting figures. Ronald’s role was therefore different from simply being one member of the McDonaldland ensemble: he was the company’s principal child-oriented mascot for decades.
