McDonald’s first national children’s meal promotion, launched in 1979, was called the Happy Meal.
The Happy Meal combined a child-sized portion of food with a toy, creating a product specifically designed around families and children. It followed earlier regional experiments, including a boxed children’s meal developed by advertising executive Bob Bernstein. The national launch helped make the colorful box itself an important part of McDonald’s branding.
The Happy Meal is often confused with the earlier local promotions that inspired it. Those tests were not the same as the nationally branded product. The meal’s packaging, toys, and tie-ins also changed repeatedly over the years, but the name remained stable. Its 1979 launch became a major milestone in McDonald’s family-oriented marketing and helped establish collectible promotional toys as a lasting fast-food advertising technique.
