What was McDonald’s first national advertising slogan, used before “You Deserve a Break Today”?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s first national advertising slogan was “Look for the Golden Arches.”

The slogan appeared during the company’s early period of national expansion, when recognizable restaurant identification was especially important to motorists. It directed potential customers toward the large roadside arch structures that distinguished McDonald’s locations from many competing restaurants.

The phrase was not merely a description of a logo. In the mid-twentieth century, the Golden Arches were physical architectural features visible from roads and highways, so the slogan worked as practical navigation as well as advertising. This is why the wording is sometimes remembered as part of McDonald’s roadside identity rather than as a conventional product claim.

Later campaigns emphasized food, value, family, or emotional association. “You Deserve a Break Today,” launched in 1971, became far more famous, but it was not the company’s first national slogan. The earlier line reflects how architecture and advertising were closely connected in the brand’s early history.
