McDonald’s first mascot was Speedee, a smiling chef figure used on the company’s early signs and branding.
Speedee represented the quick-service idea behind the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant system. The character was typically shown with a hamburger-shaped head and a chef’s hat, reinforcing the connection between speed and food preparation.
Speedee predates Ronald McDonald, who became the company’s best-known mascot in the 1960s. The name is sometimes confused with McDonald’s later “Speedee Service System,” but the mascot and the operating method were closely linked in the brand’s early identity.
As McDonald’s expanded nationally, the company shifted its advertising toward the Golden Arches and characters such as Ronald McDonald. Speedee consequently disappeared from most consumer-facing branding, although the character remains important in McDonald’s history.
