Speedee was McDonald’s first logo mascot, shown as a winking chef in 1948.
The character represented the McDonald brothers’ “Speedee Service System,” which emphasized fast preparation and standardized food. Speedee appeared in the early McDonald’s branding as a chef-like figure with a hamburger-shaped head.
Speedee was not the same character as Ronald McDonald, who became the chain’s best-known advertising mascot in the 1960s. The Speedee identity belonged to the restaurant’s early service concept and corporate marks.
McDonald’s later moved away from Speedee as its primary public-facing symbol. The Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald eventually became more prominent, but Speedee remains an important link between the chain’s operational promise and its early visual identity.
