What was J.R.R. Tolkien’s military role in the First World War Battle of the Somme?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien served as a signals officer during the First World War Battle of the Somme.

He was commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915 after studying at Oxford. Tolkien trained in signalling, which involved communication between military units, and was sent to France in 1916. He took part in the Somme offensive, one of the war’s largest and bloodiest campaigns.

Tolkien returned to England later in 1916 after becoming ill with trench fever. His wartime experiences influenced some readers’ interpretations of his fiction, especially its depictions of loss, ruined landscapes, friendship, and endurance. Tolkien himself resisted simple one-to-one readings that treated Middle-earth as a direct allegory of the First World War.

The term “signals officer” describes his military function, not a literary occupation. Tolkien was later promoted to lieutenant. His wartime service also affected his personal life because many of his school friends were killed in the conflict.
