What is the title of the opening chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

The opening chapter of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is titled “An Unexpected Party.”

The chapter introduces Bilbo Baggins at home in Bag End and begins the journey that changes his quiet life. Gandalf arrives first, followed by Thorin Oakenshield and thirteen dwarves, who gather for a meeting and an evening of songs, food, and plans.

The party is unexpected from Bilbo’s point of view, although Gandalf has deliberately arranged the encounter. The chapter establishes the contrast between Bilbo’s comfortable habits and the dangerous adventure ahead.

The title is sometimes confused with “A Long-expected Party,” the opening chapter of The Lord of the Rings. That later chapter describes Bilbo’s birthday celebration and deliberately echoes the earlier title.
