J.R.R. Tolkien called his invented language for the Elves of Valinor Quenya.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed Elvish languages. Within his fictional history, it was associated especially with the High Elves, including the Ñoldor and Vanyar, and was influenced in its sound and structure by languages such as Finnish, Latin, and Greek.
Tolkien did not create Quenya merely as a list of decorative words. He developed grammar, vocabulary, sound patterns, writing systems, and historical changes that gave the language the feel of a real language family. The language’s fictional history also explains its relationship to other Elvish tongues.
Sindarin is the most important neighboring Elvish language and is associated particularly with the Sindar of Middle-earth. It is not another name for Quenya. Westron is the Common Speech, while Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves.
